Scientists have found a way to “bind” cells to implants more tightly

MISIS University scientists conducted a series of experiments to study the ability of cells to “attach” to silicon-coated implants. As it turned out, silicon wafers with a porous surface “hold” cells better, are non-toxic, and can deeply absorb drugs.
Such a function of silicon wafers can be actively used in medicine, in particular in the field of reconstructive surgery, when doctors need to restore a patient’s bone tissue. This is done by creating polymer “scaffolds” – frames that just serve to restore bone tissue.
As noted by one of the authors of the study, an engineer at the Center for Biomedical Engineering, Artyom Ilyasov, silicon wafers with a porous surface can find their niche in biomedical technologies.
“On silicon, it is convenient to study the effect of surface roughness and hardness on the processes occurring in cells,” the scientist says. “Moreover, the material is non-toxic, biodegradable, and it is easy to functionalize, for example, it can be loaded with a drug or various ligands – functional groups or molecules – can be attached to the surface.
In the near future, scientists are going to continue research with other types of cells. And we are confident that in the future, silicon wafers with a porous surface can find their niche in biomedical technologies, for example, to create sensors for reading electrical signals from tissues and interfaces for stimulating cells.
