Scientists at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden’s largest and one of Europe’s largest medical research universities, conducted the largest study to date of blood parameters in people who lived to be 100 years or more. The study found that, starting around age 60, centenarians had higher blood levels of total cholesterol and iron and lower levels of glucose, creatinine and uric acid and a number of other indicators than those study participants who did not live to be 100 years old. . The study was published in the journal GeroScience.
Scientists studied the results of clinical blood tests of more than 44.5 thousand residents of Sweden for the period 1985-2020, with an emphasis on tests of people born between 1893 and 1920. Of all the people in the study, about 2.7%, or 1,224 people, lived to be at least 100 years old, and of these, 84.7% were women. In addition, Swedish scientists analyzed the results of several similar, although less extensive studies conducted over different periods by colleagues from Denmark, Japan, Italy and Germany.
“We found that, overall, those who lived to age 100 had lower levels of glucose, creatinine, and uric acid from age 60,” the study says. “Few 100-year-olds had higher blood glucose levels.” 6.5 at an earlier age or creatinine level above 125.” Scientists also note some obvious factors that allow a person to live to 100 years: genetic factors, lifestyle, in particular nutrition, smoking, drinking alcohol and physical activity.
