Scientists in Argentina have discovered the Gamma strain of coronavirus in large hairy armadillos. The same discovery was made by American experts – the variants “Alpha” and “Gamma” were found in white-tailed deer. It is reported “News”.
The detection of strains was made at a time when “omicron” was circulating among the local population, which supplanted all previous variants.
“In addition to the fact that we discovered a new species of animals susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, we found the Gamma variant in them three months after its last detection in humans,” the study notes.
Experts note that the greatest danger is the appearance of newer and more dangerous variants of coronavirus in animals. According to Stanislav Ostavnov, head of the laboratory for analyzing population health indicators and digitalization of healthcare at MIPT, if interspecies transitions continue, a new mutated Gamma may appear, which will become no less dangerous.
