Scientists from China were able to isolate a new mineral from lunar soil samples that were brought to Earth in 2020 during the Chang’e-5 mission. The mineral was given the name “Chang’e Stone”. This was announced by Vice Chairman of the National Atomic Energy Agency (NAAE) of China Dong Baotong.
“A new mineral discovered in the lunar soil by a group of Chinese scientists who explored the natural satellite of the Earth was named the Chang’e Stone in accordance with the decision of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) Commission on the Classification and Naming of New Minerals,” said Baotong.
In addition, the Deputy Chairman of the NAAE noted that the discovery of a new mineral is a major scientific achievement of the country in the field of space research, and the Moon exploration project itself is one of the most complex and technically large-scale projects.
Baotong stressed that it took 17 years to successfully complete the Cheng’e-5 mission.
