Scientist-surveyor from Birobidzhan arrested in treason case

FSB investigators charged scientist-surveyor and former official of the Jewish Autonomous Region Valery Kachin with treason, informed TASS with reference to a representative in law enforcement agencies. What exactly he is accused of is not specified.

“In the course of carrying out operational-search activities, the FSB of Russia detained a scientist Kachin Valery Sergeevich. He was charged with treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). A measure of restraint in the form of detention by the Birobidzhansky District Court of the Jewish Autonomous Region was chosen against the accused,» the report said.

Kachin was transferred to the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center in Moscow for further investigative actions. As noted in the Lefortovsky Court of Moscow, the investigation asked to extend the arrest of the scientist until March 12.

Kachin works in the reserve “Bastak” in the Jewish Autonomous Region as a junior researcher with a specialization in “geoinformation systems”, follows from the information on the website of the reserve. It is specified that in 2014 he graduated from the Amur State University. Sholom Aleichem with a degree in Information Systems and Technologies. Until 2018, Kachin worked in the mayor’s office of Birobidzhan.

In early August, in the case of treason, arrested Director of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) Alexander Shiplyuk. He was placed in a pre-trial detention center in Lefortovo.

In early July, in the case of treason arrested Chief Researcher of the Institute Anatoly Maslov, he is also in the pre-trial detention center in Lefortovo. The institute’s website states that it is engaged in work in the field of viscous gas dynamics. Fomin said that the scientist worked with colleagues from the United States, China and Germany.

The day before it was arrested another Novosibirsk scientist, Dmitry Kolker, head of the Laboratory of Quantum Optical Technologies at Novosibirsk State University, in a treason case. According to the scientist’s relatives, he was accused of collaborating with Chinese intelligence agencies. Two days after his arrest, on July 3, it became known that he had died in a Moscow hospital, where he had been transferred from the pre-trial detention center. Kolker was reported to have been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
