Schools have started testing according to new rules: there will be no foreign students

“Teachers are worried”, especially lazy ones strive to get sick

In March, all Russian schools and colleges begin to write the All-Russian test papers. This subtype of final tests is needed not for schoolchildren, but for schools. Based on the assessment results, the educational institution claims to be promoted in the ranking, and therefore can count on a grant or bonus. This year, the VPR system, also known as “diagnostics,” has undergone several key changes. “MK” asked the honored teacher Alexander Snegurov to evaluate them.

The VPR is called a mini-version of the Unified State Exam, so middle and older schoolchildren are prepared for the All-Russian test almost like the Unified State Exam. Impressionable students approach this work in the same way: nervous and jittery. “It’s not worth it,” the teaching methodologists answer this. The results of the VPR have almost no effect on the student’s personal performance. Schools and teachers are mainly assessed. They, in turn, are asked by the inspectors not to “cheat” students for the sake of high scores.

VPR has been written since 2015. Previously, there were complaints about the organization of tests – from overloading students to the tasks themselves. Thus, in the tests there were questions with two equivalent answers. Some tasks were formulated inaccurately, hence their double interpretation. The level of preparation of the students was not taken into account: in the assignments for the seventh grade there could have been a question for the ninth grade. Then they did a serious “work on mistakes.”

In ten years, the system can be said to have settled down. So, what innovations await VPR in 2024? The most important and significant thing is that this year the VPR in foreign languages will not be taken. In addition, 45 minutes will be allotted for solving tasks, and not 1-2 hours, as before. And the decision process will be completely transferred to digital format.

VPR, in contrast to individual diagnostics, is called a test for the teacher. To avoid the temptation for the school to suggest an answer, testing takes place under the supervision of outside teachers. But there are stories in the teachers’ lounges that class teachers allegedly call the parents of “especially gifted children” and ask them to sit at home that day. What won’t you do for your home school?!

“Teachers often say that they not only teach, but also learn from their children,” Honored Teacher of Russia Alexander Snegurov comments on VPR-2024. – Asking a particularly lazy student to “get sick” on the day of writing a CD is a joke from the students’ arsenal. Of course, teachers cannot say this seriously.

– Why, in your opinion, were foreign languages excluded from the VPR program?

– I think that the return to domestic origins has affected the attitude towards foreign languages. Indirectly, as reflecting a certain world of the conventional West. Although, they don’t talk about it out loud. On the other hand, in recent years the program has been biased towards “languages”: there has been too much emphasis on studying them. They started teaching foreign languages from the second grade. From the fifth, a second language was introduced. Apparently, they decided to moderate their ardor.

– How will reducing the time spent writing VPR affect the results?

“I think this will have a negative impact on the students.” Many children need exercise. They can spend a long time delving into tasks, and then write everything down quickly and well. And when there is less time, they will start to get nervous and make mistakes. It is better not to shorten the duration. Give yourself some time to think calmly. Although there are children who always cope earlier. But such people, alas, are in the minority.

– What are your wishes for the VPR this year?

– I have a wish – to reduce the volume of control and diagnostic work. No more than two per year. So that it doesn’t take a lot of time to prepare. So that the tasks correspond to the program and are not unnecessarily complicated. There are children who are determined to do this kind of work; it does not bring them stressful situations. And there are those who are already worried a week ago. And of course, teachers are also worried. This factor must also be taken into account.
