Soaring enthusiasts let down by ignorance of chemistry

An attempt to smoke a vape at school No. 1 in the city of Lesozavodsk, Primorsky Territory, resulted in hospitalization. Five students and one teacher were injured. They were taken to the hospital with swelling and difficulty breathing. Doctors diagnosed an acute allergic reaction.

It all started when 10th grade students decided to refill their vape during recess. We laid out on a desk in the algebra classroom; there was very little time left before the bell rang, so the steamers were in a hurry. In their haste, they broke a bottle of vigorous dressing. A thick aroma wafted through the office. Then the young vaping lovers came up with a great idea – as it seemed to them. They decided to kill the smell with an even more odorous substance.

– We have cleaning chemicals in our classroom. They opened the cabinet, took out bleach and sprinkled it on the puddle. Then they began to collect everything with a rag,” a 10th grade student from secondary school No. 1 told MK.

At the same moment, the crowd was seized by a wild cough. Choking began and it became difficult to breathe. Just then the bell rang. The teacher entered the class. She also inhaled carbon monoxide.

– Everyone’s eyes began to water. They opened the windows, but it didn’t help,” the student said. “We thought someone had sprayed pepper spray.” But they didn’t understand why all of a sudden, what was happening.

The situation was clarified by chemical technologist Arseny Petrov. He told MK that young vaping lovers were let down by their lack of knowledge of chemistry.

-Vape flavors may contain alcohol or vinegar. Both substances cannot be mixed with chlorine. Acetic essence, when combined with chlorine, forms chlorine gas, which even in small quantities can cause coughing, breathing difficulties and burning eyes. And if you mix alcohol with chlorine, chloroform is formed. The same one that is used for anesthesia. It will not be possible to achieve such concentration as during anesthesia, either by accident or on purpose, but a headache will be guaranteed.

Judging by the symptoms, the composition of the ill-fated liquid included vinegar.

That day, the administration decided not to continue classes. The entire school was sent home. The classrooms were left for ventilation.

Law enforcement agencies and PDN employees have become involved in vaping lovers.

Currently, all victims have been discharged from the hospital. The steamers promised to give up the bad habit and not vape anymore.
