The mother of teenager Ethan Crumbley, who carried out the shooting at a Michigan high school, was accused of criminal neglect of her son. Prosecutors said Jennifer Crumbley and her married lover held sex parties with swingers at hotels after work instead of socializing with the teenager.

Jennifer Crumbley and Brian Melosh were charged with four counts of manslaughter. So the court assessed their role in the mass shooting at Oxford High School. On November 30, 17-year-old Ethan Crumbley went on a shooting spree, killing four students and injuring six teenagers and a teacher. Prosecutors found that the shooter’s mother and her lover spent time not only on sex, but also on horseback riding and skiing. Jennifer did not take Ethan with her, stating that he did not like horses. State prosecutors also showed excerpts from the teenager’s diary. There were lines like: “My parents don’t hear my requests for help or a psychotherapist,” “I don’t have any help in solving my psychological problems, and this makes me shoot this damn school.” Also shown in court was correspondence between the son and mother, where the word “love” was used only three times over several years. Moreover, prosecutors found out that the gun with which Ethan carried out the massacre was bought for him by his mother’s lover at a Black Friday sale. Jennifer herself stated that that purchase caused her irritation, since her lover thereby forced her to wander around the shops alone for some time.
Prosecutors charged Jennifer and her boyfriend with gross negligence. But they both refused to plead guilty. The trial is ongoing.
