This year has been declared the year of the teacher and mentor by the President of Russia. If you look at our historical heritage, the teacher has always been at the center of the education system. The formation of lyceums in Tsarist Russia, schools in the pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary period, the high results of Soviet education, the fundamental nature of which was not only beyond doubt, but was an unattainable height for the vast majority of foreign countries – all this was based on bright and extraordinary teachers. Every day, creating and strengthening domestic pedagogy, they worked for our younger generation.

The decision taken by the President of Russia to dedicate 2023 to teachers and mentors very clearly marks the benchmark for our country. It is also a bright signal to the whole world – the social function of education and upbringing is paramount for our society.

We regard our sovereign educational system as the key to the spiritual and moral development of the individual. Whatever the depth of basic subject knowledge, society has a great future only in combination with educational work, with the instillation of correct life guidelines in new generations. A future in which you can conquer any life and career heights, accelerate scientific and technological progress and develop your country. And we understand that all this depends primarily on the one who teaches children, acts as a mentor for them.

I would like to appeal to the entire pedagogical community – and in our country there are more than 2 million pedagogical workers, hundreds of thousands of mentors in various fields – and note that this thematic year actually has no boundaries. Yes, we will brightly honor teachers and do everything so that representatives of the most important profession on Earth feel especially revered, in demand and needed, but this is a big job in its content, and it is definitely not limited by any time frame. We are talking about pressing issues – support in the development of their own programs, the development of personal professional skills, mutual respect in the workforce and on the part of parents, decent pay, the elimination of bureaucratic burden, avoiding excessive reporting, material incentives.

What a modern teacher needs is known. However, meaningful change takes time. We are moving towards them progressively, consistently solving all the problems through lawmaking, changing the structure of the work of educational organizations, creating new career and professional opportunities. We also have much to form, but only together!

In 2023, large-scale competitions of professional skills “Teacher of the Year”, “Educator of the Year”, “Director of the Year”, “I give my heart to children” will be held. For the first time there will be a competition “The First Teacher” for primary school teachers. The society is already responding to new actions. For example, “Say thanks to your teacher”, “Teach, develop, inspire.” And of course, we place special emphasis on the Pedagogical Dynasties of Russia project.

If I were asked the question “What allows the Russian education system to be one of the best in the world?”, then the answer is obvious: the preservation of traditions based on the teachings of great teachers – such as Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky, whose 200th birthday we celebrate in this year and many more. We carefully store and continue to use their developments, adding pedagogical innovations, technological tools that allow these ideas to be relevant today.

When we take traditions as a basis and embody them in modern formats, the talent of a teacher is revealed especially brightly. The best experience is preserved in our unique pedagogical dynasties, whose number throughout the country exceeds 500. At the same time, we have not yet completed the collection of information, and we will gradually post the stories of such families on a separate resource – “Pedagogical dynasties of Russia”.

In order to acquaint as many people as possible with hereditary teachers, we will collect an almanac of pedagogical dynasties. Such an idea has matured for a long time, it was decided to start collecting stories from the family of the Russian language and literature teacher Valentina Vasilievna Sekovanova from the Kostroma region. On February 23, 2023, she celebrated her 100th birthday. All her labor activity is connected with the Luptyuzhskaya basic comprehensive school named after A.P. Sekovanov, founded in 1888 by her father-in-law Alexander Pavlovich. Her son, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, works at Kostroma State University.

In such an important year, the teaching profession must be shown in faces. So we will get a kind of “Honor Board”, in the regions they will know the real heroes of pedagogical work.

In some families, the total teaching experience is several hundred years. For example, in the Republic of Bashkortostan there is a pedagogical dynasty of the Kutlievs-Gilyazetdinovs-Yagudins, whose total professional experience is over 700 years. In the Republic of Chuvashia, one of the largest pedagogical dynasties is represented by the Dubensky family with a total experience of over 650 years. For more than 300 years, the Makhov dynasty, which unites ten teachers, has been teaching in the Belgorod region.

It is the families of hereditary teachers who keep the unique experience of Russian pedagogy. Here the love for the profession is inherited. And it doesn’t matter what subject area they choose – Russian language and literature, history and social studies, chemistry, biology, geography, English, whether they work in primary grades, whether they hold the position of director or adviser to the director of the school for education.

I am sure that pedagogical glory has no boundaries, and we rightfully have someone to be proud of. It is important to talk about the selfless service of teachers and mentors to their students, to share unique approaches in their work. We will certainly implement all this at the upcoming April forum of representatives of pedagogical dynasties. It will be held in Ulyanovsk and will bring together representatives from all over the country. We look forward to all participants. And here’s what I suggest you think about. It would be right, in addition to individual projects dedicated, for example, to pedagogical dynasties, to create a memorable place for the whole country – the Hall of Pedagogical Glory, where every student could learn the life stories of teachers that sometimes influenced the fate of entire generations. It is still difficult to say who could lead this work, but there is no doubt that it is important to implement this idea in a quality, thorough manner and with the involvement of the professional community.

Sergey Kravtsov, Minister of Education of the Russian Federation
