German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the idea of banning the issuance of Schengen visas to citizens of the Russian Federation is hardly feasible.
“It is very difficult for me to imagine such a development of events,” he said at a press conference in response to a request from the media to comment on the relevant initiatives.
The Chancellor recalled that Germany had already imposed sanctions against a large number of specific individuals in Russia.
Earlier, the representative of the European Commission, Anita Hipper, said that there are no procedures in the EU to ban the issuance of short-term visas to foreigners, including Russians. However, according to her, in each specific case, the issue is considered by the EU states, taking into account the relevant circumstances.
“There will always be categories of people who should be issued visas,” she explained. – For example, in humanitarian cases. And also for family members, journalists or dissidents,”
In a number of EU countries, it is proposed to restrict Russians from entering the EU on short-term visas.
