German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed the appointment of Boris Pistorius as the new Minister of Defense. The head of the German government wrote about this on his Twitter page.
“I am glad that the outstanding politician of our country, Boris Pistorius, will become the new Minister of Defense. Thanks to his experience, competence and perseverance, as well as his big heart, he is the perfect fit for the Bundeswehr,” wrote Scholz.
Earlier today it became known that Pistorius will be sworn in on Thursday, January 19th. He will receive a certificate of appointment from the federal president and take an oath in the Bundestag.
Pistorius was born in 1962, earlier occupied Minister of the Interior of Lower Saxony since 2013. From 2006 to 2013 he was the mayor of Osnabrück, and since 2017 he has been a member of the state parliament in Hannover (the administrative center of Lower Saxony).
Lambrecht filed resigned on January 16 due to too much media attention to her person, which allegedly interferes with the normal work of the ministry. Before her, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was Minister of Defense. She replaced her party member Ursula von der Leyen in this post, who was elected head of the European Commission.
