Russia’s largest Buddhist temple opened in Tuva – Kommersant

The largest Buddhist monastery in Russia was opened today, April 28, in the Republic of Tyva. The 12-story temple was built with the financial support of the Cultural Foundation. Kuzhuget Shoigu, the construction of the complex has been underway since 2014.
During the opening ceremony, a sacred relic was laid at the base of the central statue of the monastery – a piece of the ashes of the Buddha, taken out by the 14th Dalai Lama from Tibet in 1959. The relic was handed over to the Tuvan Buddhist monastery during an audience with representatives of the Cultural Fund named after. Kuzhuget Shoigu in India last year.
The project of the temple complex was developed taking into account the seismic features of the region. The interior decoration was carried out under the guidance of the Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, sculptor Dashi Namdakov. The total area of the complex was 9.3 hectares.
Earlier, the head of the region, Vladislav Khovalyg, noted that “extremely scrupulous” work was carried out when filling the monastery. On the first floor of the monastery there is a Buddhist exposition, which presents more than 3 thousand items from the fund of the National Museum of the Republic, including a large number of religious books in Tibetan and Old Mongolian, and among them is a unique collection of Tibetan texts with the words of the Buddha, found near the village of Kungurtug in the 1970s.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated participants of the opening ceremony and residents of the republic with a historical event, noting that the complex will become one of the main Buddhist religious, cultural and educational centers of the country.
