Russia’s capital will have to be moved to Siberia if the temperature rises by 5 degrees – Kommersant

In the event of a warming climate on the planet and an increase in the global average annual temperature by 5 degrees, the capital of Russia can be moved to Siberia, climatologist Alexei Kokorin believes. He clarified that this is unlikely to be possible in the near future.

“It is quite realistic that this will happen, even if not by the 2050-2060s, but, say, by the 2080s,” Mr. Kokorin told RIA Novosti.

By this time, according to him, the temperature on Earth will increase by 2-2.5 degrees relative to the end of the 19th century. Because of this, heat waves will cover the planet at least two to three times more often, that is, every three years.

According to the climatologist, under the worst-case scenario, the temperature on the planet could rise by 4.5-5 degrees. In this case, eight to nine years out of 10 will be abnormally hot.

“It’s just a different life, it means that in the summer it will probably be impossible to live in such a metropolis as Moscow. It is possible that if it really gets so bad, then the capital will be, say, Krasnoyarsk or Novosibirsk, ”added Alexei Kokorin.

In 2022 Roshydromet fixed accelerating the accumulation of greenhouse gases in Russia. According to him, the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) began to grow faster in the country. Experts believe that the increase in natural emissions may be caused by climate warming. To reduce risks, Roshydromet advised to reduce the share of hydrocarbon fuels. Russia set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
