Russians will see the Draconid meteor shower starting Sunday evening

According to the press service of the Moscow Planetarium, maximum activity of the Draconid meteor shower is expected on the morning of October 9. Astronomers predict that between 5 and 15 “shooting stars” will be observed within an hour. The meteor shower will be visible from the evening of October 8th.
Meteors are flashes from the combustion of small celestial bodies in the Earth’s atmosphere. The Draconid shower, which originates from the constellation Draco, can be observed from October 6 to October 10.
Astronomers explained that the maximum activity of the Draconid meteor shower, generated by comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, is expected around 10:00 Moscow time on Monday, October 9. Between 5 and 15 meteors per hour are predicted to be visible, according to the International Meteor Organization. However, stronger showers have occurred in the past, with activity reaching 100 to 400 meteors per hour.
The radiant, the point in the sky where meteors appear to be coming from, will be near the Dragon’s Head asterism. It will be visible high above the northwestern horizon throughout the night and will trend north by morning.
The Moscow Planetarium reported that it will be possible to observe the Draconids in clear weather from the evening of October 8 until dawn.
