A new procedure for deleting personal biometric data has been developed by the Russian Ministry of Digital Development. The draft of the relevant order of the ministry has been submitted for public discussion.
As it became known to MK, it is still possible to demand the removal of your biometric data. To do this, you need to contact each organization in which they are stored. For example, today it is customary in almost all banks to take pictures of new customers when issuing debit and credit cards, as well as loans. This is also practiced, for example, by fitness centers, and recently the metropolitan metro has also been collecting biometric information so that trips can be “paid by a person”.
From June 1, 2023, the new law on biometrics allows storing biometrics only in the Unified Biometric System (EBS, bio.rt.ru), which is the state one. All other organizations that store biometrics and use it to identify or verify the identity of a citizen will have to transfer it to the EBS and remove it from their systems. In other information systems, with the consent of the citizen, there will be only biometric vectors (mathematically transformed biometric information), with their help it will be possible to receive services.
With the adoption of the order, the removal of information will become easier and faster: it will be enough to apply to the operator of the Unified Biometric System with a statement. The federal operator will remove the biometrics from itself and send a request for the removal of information to everyone to whom the vectors were transferred. The citizen’s data will be destroyed at his request. By the way, there is already a Biometrics section on the public services portal. If a person has passed biometrics for EBS, then this is already displayed in his personal account on the State Services. By clicking the “delete” button, you can take your data from the EBS. With the entry into force of the order in the same place, citizens will be able to track which organizations have this data and revoke it if they wish.
