Russians leaving the country began to throw animals in shelters

The departure of many people from Russia abroad in recent weeks could not but affect the fate of their pets. Many do not dare to take cats, dogs and guinea pigs with them, even if the documents for them are in order. So you have to leave your favorites in your hometown. Zoo hotels are overcrowded; more and more thoroughbred animals appear in shelters; The service “walking and feeding animals in the absence of owners” is incredibly popular.

Animal hotel owner Kristina Karpova says the number of people in need of pets rose in September. “Today a woman brought us two cats. She spontaneously succeeded: in the morning she called us, and an hour later she arrived with the animals. She said that she was leaving urgently with her family.

to Finland. She doesn’t know what to do with the cats yet, she was afraid to take them with her. She said that she would decide later, how she would more or less settle in a new place, ”continues Christina.

Another trend, according to the interlocutor, is to leave pets for a longer than usual period of overexposure. “If earlier they brought them to us on average for a week, now they often leave them for three weeks, and for a month. We have always discussed the terms of stay of our furry guests before, and even more so it is important to do this in the current conditions. It is not known when people will return from abroad.”

— How difficult is it to bring an animal with you to another country? What documents are required for this?

– The animal must be vaccinated, microchipped – not all owners do this, and some do not even think about such things. The procedure takes some time. Now people are in a panic mood, they are going to leave in a hurry, they are not up to getting a veterinary passport, of course.

If a cat or dog is not vaccinated, this cannot be done quickly. A week and a half before vaccination, the cat must be dewormed. After vaccination, it is worth observing the animal for another week, and preferably two, because immunity is formed for about half a month. At this time, adverse reactions may occur, such as allergies, up to anaphylactic shock. On the way, such an animal will die.

The next risk that pet owners are well aware of is the vaccine manufacturer. Even if the pet is vaccinated, then, most likely, with a Russian drug (with problems imported in the country). The owners are afraid that a cat or dog vaccinated with a vaccine not recognized in Europe may not be allowed to cross the border.

“Our hotel tries to accept animals for overexposure at least two weeks after vaccination, so that both we and the owners can be calm about them. We make exceptions in rare cases. And the border guards have much stricter conditions,” comments Kristina Karpova.

– What do you do if the owner promised to return for a pet on such and such a day, but is delayed?

“Of course, we don’t throw animals away. They are in our care. We feed them, walk them, take care of them – everything is as usual. We are always in contact with the owner, please keep us informed of their affairs. It happens that if a person has not decided when he will return from abroad, or he has problems with communication, he asks his relatives living in the city for help, and we are already cooperating with them.

Those leaving the country turn not only to large organizations for overexposure, but also to individual entrepreneurs. “I have my own circle of clients, I mainly work with them,” says Nina Petrova, the owner of the home mini-hotel for animals. At the same time, it contains 3-4 cats and the same number of dogs. All only with veterinary passports. – There is one young businessman who has been constantly using the services of my mini-hotel for the last 5-6 years. Before, he always left the dog for 9-10 days. And then suddenly he came and asked to shelter Rex for two months. I even paid with a margin for another week – it seems like I left a tip. But I understand that he may not return at all … “

Pet owners without a veterinary passport are forced to go other ways. One humane enough is to hire a “nurse” for the pet in case of his departure, who will walk, feed and entertain the animal in the owner’s own house. If all family members leave, the option of living for an employee or even two in the same apartment is discussed. However, directly for service of a dog they receive conditional money. Students are eager to take advantage of this opportunity.

Another way is to take the pet to a shelter, lying that the family had an allergy from it, a child was born in the family, or a grandmother died, who lived with the pet. Elena, the hostess of a shelter in the Moscow region, tells about this.

“The owners, who are ashamed to admit that they are parting with cats forever, but don’t want to lie about allergies, just throw them on the territory of the shelter,” says Elena. – We, for example, have a low fence, with a human height. The other day we found two purebred cats on the territory. At first they were surprised: how did they climb over the fence? And then they caught one comrade red-handed, spoke frankly. He admitted that he urgently leaves for Georgia. I couldn’t throw my Murka out onto the street, he brought it to us.

When asked why a resident of the Moscow Region did not bring a cat in a human way, he admitted: he was afraid that they would not take her. And for good reason: on the websites of some shelters there were announcements that animals were not accepted due to overcrowding. And they ask you not to call in the near future, because there are no places and are not expected. At best, you can sign up, but the queue may come up in a week or a month. And not every owner has time to wait.
