Russians lack information about the Arctic – Picture of the day – Kommersant

As shown study NAFI analytical center, 85% of Russians would like to receive more information about the Russian Arctic. Three out of four respondents (77%) admit that they are not well informed about the region. In particular, only 3% were able to correctly name all the subjects included in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. According to experts, the lack of factual knowledge increases the risk of the emergence and reproduction of stereotypes, which become potential barriers to the development of the Arctic regions, attracting the right specialists and tourists. In particular, the majority believes that a significant part of the territories there is covered with snow and ice all year round, travel there is expensive and dangerous, and the region is suitable only for shift work.
At the same time, despite the lack of knowledge, the majority of Russians have a positive view of the Arctic. It is most often described as unique, scientific, pure and forward-looking.
