Russians begin to consider themselves old at an average age of 70.7 years, reports RBC with reference to a study by scientists from Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov and the Federal Research Sociological Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The conclusions of the study authors are based on the results of a survey of 1.2 thousand Russians of different ages, marital status and income levels from 65 regions of the Russian Federation. They were asked at what age old age begins, followed by clarification of when, in their opinion, old age begins in men or women.
The study revealed the following patterns in the self-perception of old age by Russian citizens:
- People in good health tend to believe that old age begins later;
- Young people expect to reach old age at a younger age than older generations;
- Women, on average, believe that old age occurs at a later age compared to men.
According to Rosstat, over the past five years, the population of Russia over the age of 55 has increased by more than 2 million people – from 40,886,973 people (27.9% of the total population of the country) at the beginning of 2016 to 43,248,980 people (29 .5% of the total population) in 2020. A quarter of them (10,442,943 people, 7% of the total population) are those under 60, the “third age” (60–74) is 55% (23,998,727, 16% of the total population).
The “oldest” are Tambov (358,649 people or 35.5% of the population over the age of 55), Tula (506,318 people, 34.4%), Ryazan (380,904, 34.3%) and Penza (448,357 , 34.2%) region. The “youngest” regions are the Chechen Republic (196,091, 13.4%), the Republic of Tyva (45,979, 14.1%) and Ingushetia (82,861, 16.5%), as well as the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (91 159, 16.8%).
