Russians’ spending on entertainment has increased by a third. Rosstat calculated citizens’ spending on sports and cultural events, as well as recreation and hobbies. Russians increased spending on entertainment by 29%, Rosstat experts calculated based on the expenses of 48 thousand households across the country. These include classes in clubs and sections, visits to cinema, museums, theaters, concerts, recreation centers, excursions and tours.
The increased demand for their services was confirmed by both leading and market players. Thus, Vladimir Ageev, director of strategy for the MTS Live service, noted that the company has been observing the trend throughout the year: “People are ready to have fun, because since the COVID-19 pandemic there has been a large shortage of content. There is also a request related to the general situation of stress.
In addition, now there really is a shortage of opportunities, associated, for example, with restrictions on travel to other countries. But people still want to have fun and spend money inside Russia. This trend will not stop any time soon and will only increase.
I would especially highlight entertainment related to children, because this is the last thing parents will save on.”
In Moscow, according to experts, in 2023 the most popular entertainment was stand-up concerts and musicals. For example, the play “Don’t be afraid of anything, I’m with you” based on the songs of the group “Secret” collected 1.5 billion rubles in the first six months on stage alone. On average, residents of the capital paid 2.5 thousand rubles for a ticket, St. Petersburg residents – 1.9 thousand rubles.
The general increase in prices, of course, affected the increase in spending in this segment, explained entertainment market expert Sergei Kartintsev: “Next year the situation with an increase in nominal expenses will continue. Expectations for rising prices in the market remain, wages are rising, and this is pushing up the entertainment sector, especially quests, performances, and performances.
In addition, due to the fact that flights are not becoming cheaper, the trend towards increasing spending within Russia will continue.”
There are also positive dynamics in the field of business events. According to a Superjob survey, 40% of companies have already planned New Year’s corporate events this year. Many companies have refused to celebrate for several years, and now employees need relaxation, emphasized Nikolai Andreev, CEO of the event company Big Jack:
“We definitely see pent-up demand, because some people haven’t had entertainment events since 2019. In addition, employees are very tired.
Everyone wants bread and circuses. But we wouldn’t say that people are willing to spend more, it’s just that everything has become so expensive that you can’t spend less.”
Analysts note that spending on visiting cafes and restaurants also increased by 13% in 2023, but spending on alcohol and tobacco remained virtually unchanged.
