Russians are advised not to use Turkish Airlines

Russians were advised not to fly to Mexico on Turkish Airlines. The Association of Tour Operators of Russia and Space Travel made a statement. The cause was an incident at Istanbul airport. On Monday, April 8, three travelers traveling to Cancun, Mexico in transit through Turkey, were not allowed on the plane. Their flight from Moscow was delayed, so the tourists missed their connection. As a result, instead of a 16-day rest, the girls were forced to go home.

Turkish Airlines said that Russian women would not be able to fly in accordance with the rules of the Mexican government due to the fact that they “have not previously been to such powerful countries as America, Canada or England” and have not visited Mexico. The victims can sue and, probably, they will win the case, says the vice-president of the Alliance of Travel Agencies, Aleksan Mkrtchyan: “This is not the first time and not the last, Turkish airlines regularly seat Russians. Either from flights to Argentina, then to Brazil, then to Mexico. Airlines constantly fear that Russians will be deported.

And according to international laws, the airline that brought the person to a particular airport in a particular country bears all financial responsibility for the deportation of any passenger.

That is, in this case, if the Mexican authorities had not allowed Russians into Mexican territory, then all financial responsibility would have fallen on Turkish Airlines. You can sue the airline, but we must not forget that this will have to be done in accordance with international laws. Because Turkish Airlines is outside Russian jurisdiction, and a claim must only be filed in an international court.

Of course, the Russian tour operator who transported the people is obliged to do everything according to Russian law. To first of all help people get their money back for the hotel, since they bought the entire package: accommodation, meals, transfer, air tickets. In this case, they can sue the tour operator who sold the tour. The Russian court, naturally, will be on the side of tourists, the probability of this is 99.9%.”

Tour operators have warned Russians that when traveling to Latin America it is better to avoid flying through Turkey and use alternative routes. Many clients choose to travel through European countries, notes Maya Kotlyar, head of the individual tourism company Mayel Travel: “There are alternative routes. It’s just that tickets through Turkey are cheaper, and the transit route is closer. There are tickets with transfers in Dubai, which has long been a key hub for transfers, including on flights to Latin America. You can find tickets through the European Frankfurt, again, if you have a visa. The price range is approximately the same.”

Mexican border guards have stepped up controls on incoming Russians starting in early 2023. ATOR warned about this. The reason is that the country has increasingly become used as a transit zone. The requirements for tourists are the same – return ticket, hotel reservation or invitation.
