“Russian women’s tennis should not disappoint” – Kommersant FM

The Russian woman won her debut match in Australian Open qualifying at the age of 16. Alina Korneeva defeated American Sachia Vickery in the first round. The Australian Open is traditionally the first Grand Slam tournament of the new season. The prize fund in 2024 has grown by a significant 13% and now amounts to a little more than $59 million. The athlete will receive $82 thousand for participation in the first round alone. So the young Russian Alina Korneeva will earn good money, even if she just makes it into the main draw. And she has a chance, because Korneeva has won the Grand Slam junior tournaments twice and may well show her best side among her adult rivals, and, by the way, she’s not the only one.
In the women’s singles qualifying round, several promising athletes are playing who have every chance of becoming stars – Polina Kudermetova, Erika Andreeva. In the near future, Russian women’s tennis should not disappoint fans of this sport from our country, Honored Coach of Russia Boris Sobkin is sure:
“We have very good prospects in women’s tennis. I mean deep perspectives, not those that already exist on the surface – the same Andreeva Jr., Alina Korneeva. There are also a couple of girls aged 15 and 16 who can really join the elite pretty quickly.”
But this is a wonderful tomorrow, but for now, of the 11 Russians who are scheduled to play in the main draw, none can really claim the title. In the men’s singles, the main contender is traditionally Novak Djokovic, who has won the tournament in Australia 10 times and was the best in 2023. Bookmakers believe that the Serbian will win with a probability of 47%, and Boris Sobkin did not dare to argue with the bookmakers:
“If Novak Djokovic is healthy, then he is the main contender for victory. The first number has appropriate expectations. Judging by the end of last year, Djokovic was motivated. I think this attitude will continue in Australia.”
As for the Russians, there are no sensations here either. The two main contenders are Daniil Medvedev and Andrei Rublev, says Evgeniy Fedyakov, tennis heater at the Kommersant publishing house:
“Any tennis player from the top ten to one degree or another can claim victory. Including, of course, Daniil Medvedev, who was in the finals of the Australian Open twice, and Andrei Rublev, who was not there, but probably dreams of going. Their level of skill over the past few years has shown that they can do this. The Australian Open is one of the most unpredictable Grand Slam tournaments in the sense that it is difficult to assess the form of a player at the beginning of the season.”
The probability of Daniil Medvedev’s victory, according to bookmakers, is 14%. Rublev’s is even lower. So if one of the Russians even reaches the semi-finals, this will already be a good result. Moreover, for this stage the organizers of the Australian Open will pay the participants almost $700 thousand. The prize money for the final will exceed $1 million, and the winner will receive $2.1 million.
The first matches of the Australian Open are scheduled to be played on January 14. But rains can make adjustments to the regulations. At least the start of qualifying was disrupted precisely because of the rain.
