The need for self-defense pushed students to an unconventional solution

In case of threat, the mobile phone turns… into pepper spray. An unexpected solution was proposed and implemented by students of the Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI.

As reported at NSTU, a pepper spray integrated into a mobile phone case became an innovative project of second-year students of the Faculty of Radio Engineering and Electronics Pavel Fatyanov and Evgeniy Zapesotsky. They built a container with pepper filling into the body of a regular case. It has a dispenser with a spray.

It is curious that the idea of combining objects with such different purposes was suggested to Evgeniy by the decor of his mobile phone case, depicting a spilled liquid. “So the idea arose to modernize the case by integrating a pepper spray into it,” Zapesotsky shared.

The prototype was tested in October last year and proved to be effective. During the experiment, it was found that with a canister capacity of 25 milliliters, the device allows you to make up to 50 presses. Spray distance is 1 meter.

This self-defense device easily fits into the smallest women’s handbag.

The developers’ plans are to modernize the system, that is, to introduce a protective rotating mechanism for the spray gun, which eliminates accidental use of the self-defense device, and also to improve the ergonomics of the cover itself.

The students presented their invention to the university’s student project competition, where they took 1st place in the “Design Project” category.
