WP: Russia’s space industry will shrink due to US sanctions and the growth of SpaceX’s share
The Russian space industry will shrink due to US sanctions, increased global competition and growth in the share of SpaceX, writes the Washington Post, citing a US intelligence document.
Disrupted supply chains and fragmented Western partnerships have also likely prevented Russia’s space program from receiving funding, which has been dwindling since at least 2020.
The document also says that Western components for space flights were available to Russia until 2014. But after the imposition of sanctions, these opportunities have decreased. Now, “Moscow is trying to increase material assistance” from China to support its space industry, according to the American intelligence service.
Intelligence does not directly mention SpaceX, but notes that in 2020 the US company received a certificate to transport astronauts to the ISS, while earlier the United States paid about $85 million for a seat on the Russian spacecraft. In addition, as follows from the materials, foreign customers canceled planned rocket launches from Russia and curtailed other enterprises in the space industry, “depriving them of their main source of income.”
