Russian skatecross champion Roman Bogrets died from injuries received during the competition

Russian skatecross champion Roman Bogrets died at the age of 36 after receiving serious injuries at a competition in St. Petersburg, the press service of the Russian Roller Sports Federation reported.

Skate cross is a race on roller skates on a specially prepared track with obstacles.

The sports federation clarified that the athlete received injuries on March 30 during the St. Petersburg Cross-Country Roller Skating Cup. He fell during the qualifying race, after which he was given first aid by the ambulance doctors on duty at the competition. He was then taken to the hospital by additional ambulances arriving at the scene. Roman Bogrets, according to relatives, died in the hospital, the press service reports.

The organizers and judges of the sporting event decided to reward the participants in the qualifying race and not continue the competition, the federation added. According to media reports, the competition took place at the Zhest sports club on Kosmonavtov Avenue.

The press release states that Bogrets has trained many talented young athletes in the areas of freeskate and skatecross. “I myself trained and performed a lot, and was a role model for many athletes,” the press service reported.
