Russian short track skater Sofia Prosvirnova announced that she decided to change her sports citizenship to Danish. The head of the Russian Skating Union Nikolai Gulyaev also said “RIA News”that after moving to the Danish national team, Prosvirnova will move from short track to speed skating.
“The reality is that while I decide to remain under the Russian flag, I am obliged to stay and train in the Russian Federation, which, in my position with Viktor, forces us to return to long-distance relationships, and me to be away from my family. <...> This leads me to the decision to change sports nationality. At the moment, I am in the process of moving to the Danish national team, ”wrote Sofya Prosvirnova on her Instagram (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned).
25-year-old Sofia Prosvirnova is a two-time silver and two-time bronze medalist of the World Championships in short track speed skating. She was also part of the Russian team at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi and 2018 in Pyeongchang. Last year, Prosvirnova married the Danish athlete Viktor Hald Torup, who competes in speed skating.
