The development will combat all types of pollution

The device, designed for the processing and disposal of plastic polluting the oceans, was developed by domestic specialists. Recently, their invention was protected by a patent of the Russian Federation.

As Shavkat Khasanov, one of the inventors of the invention, told MK, the device will be a catamaran, between the floats of which a waste processing device will be placed. The inventor explained that the waste disposal vessel will be able to process three types of plastic waste: products made of polymers floating on the water surface, dilapidated plastic waste submerged below sea level, and the most dangerous pollutant of the aquatic environment – the remains of plastic crushed to crumbs, which careless sailors and tourists are thrown overboard. The fact is that due to the impact of the rather aggressive aquatic environment of the oceans and seas, plastic objects are gradually erased, but the plastic does not decompose from this, it simply turns into a powder that pollutes the upper layers of the water, depriving the inhabitants of the sea of light, oxygen and, in fact, poisoning them.

The development of Russian inventors will help fight all types of pollution. What floats on the surface will be picked up by a conveyor belt installed at the front of the processing unit. She, like an escalator, will lift plastic waste on board. And what is at a depth will be sucked in by a special apparatus through corrugated pipes. Further, whole products will enter the grinder, and then into the heating chamber. Suspension taken from the depth will also be fed there. The water will evaporate, and the plastic will heat up to a liquefied state. In this form, it will be transported to the chamber, where, under the influence of a temperature of 5-7 thousand degrees Celsius, it will decompose into carbon and hydrogen. At such an eco-station, as conceived by the developers, 40-50 people will work on a rotational basis. Additional vehicles will also be required, in particular, a security vessel and unmanned aerial vehicles, which, in contact with satellites, will direct eco-catamarans to garbage accumulations.

According to the World Bank, the world’s population generates more than 2 billion tons of waste every year. And this figure is growing – experts predict that by 2050 the amount of waste will increase by 70 percent. From 1950 to 2018, about 6.3 billion tons of plastics were produced in the world, of which 9% were recycled and 12% were incinerated. At the same time, according to some reports, at least 40% of the plastic produced (about 3 billion tons) ended up in the oceans. Researchers have calculated that at these rates of pollution, by 2050, the oceans could contain more plastic than fish by weight. Entire plastic continents have been formed in the oceans, for example, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (its area is estimated at 1.5-2 the area of France).
