Russian scientists have created “killer molecules” to fight cancer

Russian scientists, together with foreign colleagues, have synthesized a line of compounds that trigger the process of destruction of proteins critical for cancer cells, reports RT with reference to the Russian Science Foundation.
At the same time, it is reported that we are talking about compounds that are non-toxic to healthy tissues. Researchers believe that new specific enzymes could form the basis for anti-cancer drugs. The developers synthesized two dozen molecules based on glutarimide, a substance that easily binds to the enzyme and protein inside the cell. Glutarimide is already used in practice as a component of other drugs. “Chimeric constructs of this type are an ideal killer, since they can be made for almost any desired target protein. At the same time, they work in the cell at extremely low concentrations, which helps to avoid side effects,” explained the mechanism of action of new substances, project leader Mikhail Krasavin, head of the specialized laboratory of St. Petersburg State University.
