Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky said that mandatory hours of studying regional history will be introduced. He did not specify exactly when the new block of lessons will appear in the school curriculum, but explained that this will happen “in the near future.”
“There is a single subject, history, within which the history of Russia, world history, is studied. In the near future, regional history will also be added, mandatory hours will appear, this is a big novelty,” said Mr. Medinsky during a meeting with history teachers at the Russian State Pedagogical University. The head of the Russian Ministry of Education, Sergei Kravtsov, said at the same event that the number of hours allocated to studying history in high school will be increased starting from the next academic year. According to the minister, 340 hours should be allocated for it – 2 hours per week for 34 school weeks.
