Olympic champion in ice dancing Roman Kostomarov told how difficult it was for him to experience the amputation of his limbs. According to him, he wanted to die, because he could not imagine how he would live as a disabled person.
The athlete remembered how he fell ill during the New Year holidays, but did not see a doctor in time. The cough kept getting worse, and on January 10, Kostomarov could no longer tolerate it and agreed to call an ambulance.
“I never expected that I would wake up on January 17 or 20 with black legs and arms. I was under such anesthesia, they barely pulled me out of the coma. If it weren’t for my wife, my parents and friends who were there, it’s unlikely that my heart would have survived,” – Roman shared at the “Facets of Personal Brand” forum.
According to him, the realization that he was in intensive care came as a big shock to him. But what shocked him even more was the news that his limbs were dead and needed to be amputated.
“I sobbed bitterly. I even regretted that I didn’t say: “Leave me alone, let me leave this world.” When I was lying there for so long, it seemed to me that it wasn’t death that was scary, but that it was scary to remain disabled. What to do, how to make a living.” , he shared.
Kostomarov added that he still sometimes thinks that this is all just a bad dream. But he is grateful to doctors and prosthetists, continues to train, play sports and tries to live a normal life.
