This year, the epidemic of acute respiratory viral infections and influenza broke out unusually early – doctors attribute this to the weakening of the body’s immune defense after Covid. It is reported that schools are going into quarantine in batches and entire settlements are transferring children to distance learning. The influenza threat in some regions has been supplemented by outbreaks of measles, as in the Nizhny Novgorod region and Tatarstan. And Moscow clinics extended their opening hours this weekend.
According to the latest data, due to ARVI, influenza and Covid in Altai, 6 schools went into quarantine, including in Barnaul. And another 328 classes in which the incidence rate exceeded the threshold of 20% in the region switched to distance learning.
Several schools were quarantined in the Tyumen region, and one school in the Kurgan region. 17 school classes were quarantined for ARVI and influenza in Yekaterinburg, 5 in Orenburg, one each in Novosibirsk and Voronezh.
From the Kaluga region they report that in just a week the incidence of ARVI and influenza increased by 11.4%. There are many sick people in St. Petersburg. Parents in the Northern capital are outraged that children came to school on September 1 “with snot and the flu.” And now “out of 30 people, at most, 15 people go to classes,” the rest are sick.
As for Moscow, there are no classes closed due to quarantine yet. But a general increase in the number of diseases, viral and colds, is felt, even though it is “Indian summer” in the Mother See and there is no significant cooling. Preventative flu vaccinations were carried out in schools. And they spread the following message: “Dear parents! For your convenience, all Moscow children’s clinics this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, will be open from 8:00 to 20:00. If you see the first symptoms of the disease in your child (runny nose, cough, fever and fatigue), you can make an appointment with a doctor for ARVI on Saturday and Sunday, or contact the pediatrician on duty without an appointment, without postponing the visit until Monday.”
But it’s not just the flu and “common viruses” that are making an appearance this fall: outbreaks of measles similar to the one that happened this spring are being reported. New virus activity has been detected in the Tambov region, where 11 cases of disease have been identified “among the Roma population,” reports the local Rospotrebnadzor.
This week, by urgently vaccinating 400 people, a measles outbreak was localized in the Nizhny Novgorod region. There, a total of 93 people fell ill with measles; schools in two villages, Bolshoye and Maloye Tumanovo, were closed and transferred to distance learning. “Patient zero” was an unvaccinated person who came from another region. In Tatarstan, a measles outbreak was also recently localized. The largest percentage of cases occurred in the capital of the republic, Kazan.
At the same time, virologists do not rule out a new epidemic in the country. The reason for this is the measles virus itself, which is 95 percent contagious (infectious), is very mobile, can quickly cover large areas and spreads by airborne droplets. There is no specialized treatment for measles, so the best way to avoid infection is vaccination in childhood.
“Such an early rise in so-called seasonal diseases is most likely associated with a decrease in the immune response of the body that has suffered from coronavirus,” says pediatrician Evgeniy Serdobinsky. – And since the phenomenon is massive, there is also herd immunity. Therefore, it is more important than ever to protect the entry point for any infection – the nose. A mask for a child is a controversial thing; I would rather advise using nasal ointment or powder before each “going out.” 99% of viruses, including measles, enter the body through the nose.
Natural remedies for strengthening the body during a period when not only the incidence of diseases is increasing, but also cold weather is setting in, are honey, lemon, ginger, and nuts. It is unlikely that they seriously charge the immune system, but they can be considered as general strengtheners.
You should not stuff your child with ascorbic acid in commercial quantities: the effect has not been proven, but it can cause damage to the gastric mucosa. But basic hygiene works quite well: wash and dry your hands more often, take walks, ventilate and moisten rooms in the house well, avoid large crowds of people. Getting a good night’s sleep is better than any ginger for maintaining the body’s defenses. You need to dress according to the season: clothes that are too light and too warm are equally harmful for a child.
As for measles, Serdobintsev advises immediately calling a doctor if there are signs of the disease such as high fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, or white spots on the oral mucosa. The same applies to any nonspecific signs of the course of a childhood disease: it is difficult for a non-specialist to recognize measles. And parents should not forget that in the post-pandemic period, all diseases, and not only viral ones, can have a more severe course. And the covid virus itself has not gone away.
