Russian “Progress” took the ISS away from a collision with space debris

The Russian transport and cargo ship Progress MS-24 took the International Space Station (ISS) away from a possible collision with space debris. This was reported by press service “Roscosmos”. As a result, the average orbital altitude increased by 900 m.
The engines of the Progress MS-24 spacecraft, docked to the Zvezda service module of the Russian segment of the ISS, turned on at 18:07. According to preliminary data, they worked for 316.5 seconds.
During the flight of the ISS, according to Roscosmos, the altitude of its orbit was adjusted 350 times, 196 times with the help of Progress engines. Today’s ISS evasive maneuver is the 38th, of which 24 were performed by Progress.
IN materials NASA’s program on the problem of space debris states that there are 25 thousand objects in Earth’s orbit larger than 10 cm in size. Basically, these objects are parts of destroyed satellites launched from Earth over the entire period of space exploration. The total weight of these debris, as of January 2022, exceeds 9 tons.
