Russian prisoners reduced deforestation by more than 30% in 2022 – Kommersant

At the end of 2022, institutions of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) reduced deforestation by 31%, to 1.27 million cubic meters. m. The indicator reached a minimum value over the past five years. This was reported RBC with reference to the study of the forest accounting organization “Roslesinforg” (a division of Rosleskhoz).

At the same time, logging in the Federal Penitentiary Service remains at the level of large Russian timber holdings. In 2022, the institutions of the Federal Penitentiary Service took 10th place among all timber harvesters in Russia, while in 2021 they took the eighth place.

Territorial units of the Federal Penitentiary Service are engaged in deforestation in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Arkhangelsk and Irkutsk Regions. In the same regions, the main decrease in logging was recorded: in the Krasnoyarsk Territory – by 43%, to 333 thousand cubic meters. m, in the Arkhangelsk region – by 35%, up to 189 thousand cubic meters. m, the Irkutsk region – by 23%, up to 450 thousand cubic meters. m.

The press service of “Roslesinforg” RBC named two reasons for the decrease in logging by the institutions of the Federal Penitentiary Service: the participation of prisoners in the Russian military operation in Ukraine and a change in reporting forms.

RBC notes that, according to the Federal Penitentiary Service, at the end of 2022, the number of prisoners in correctional institutions decreased by 32.9 thousand people, to 433 thousand people. Founder of Wagner PMC Evgeny Prigozhin informedwho recruited 50 thousand prisoners, 10 thousand of them died in the battles for Bakhmut.
