The American side forced the UN Security Council to change the original text of the Middle East resolution and include in it “virtually a license to kill” Palestinian civilians in Gaza. This was stated on Tuesday, January 9, by Anna Evstigneeva, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN.

According to the diplomat, for this purpose “the dirtiest instruments of pressure and blackmail were used, which our American colleagues slyly call effective bilateral diplomacy.”

Evstigneeva explained that instead of calling for a cessation of hostilities, the resolution included a phrase about creating conditions for a cessation of fighting, and this “is actually a license for Israel to kill Palestinian civilians in Gaza under the pretext that clearing the sector is supposedly the very steps towards creation of the mentioned conditions.”

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian had a telephone conversation. Parties discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip and around it, and also agreed to increase political and practical cooperation.

According to American sources, the United States believes that the Israeli ground operation in the Gaza Strip may end in the coming weeks. Washington is expected to urge Tel Aviv to be more selective in its strike targets.
