The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the strikes inflicted by the Israeli Air Force on the territory of Syria, should from the commentary of the official representative of the Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Foreign Ministry clarifies that on the night of February 19, the Israeli side attacked several targets in and near Damascus. As a result, one of the rockets hit a residential building, which killed five people and injured 15 more.
“We strongly condemn the military actions taken by Israel, which are a gross violation of international law. We strongly urge the Israeli side to stop armed provocations against the Syrian Arab Republic (Vedomosti) and refrain from steps that are fraught with dangerous consequences for the entire region,” Zakharova stressed.
According to the official, this practice is absolutely unacceptable, especially now – when Syria, with the help of other countries of the world, including Russia, seeks to overcome the consequences of the earthquake.
About the shelling earlier in the day reported SANA agency, citing a military source. According to the agency, one soldier was among the dead, and some of the hospitalized victims are in serious condition. It is noted that air defense systems managed to shoot down most of the fired missiles.
Reuters informedthat Israel has been carrying out air strikes on Syria in recent years due to the supply of weapons by Iran, which has expanded its military presence in the neighboring country. According to the agency’s intelligence sources, there are “thousands of militias and local militias” under Iranian command. In recent months, Israel has also stepped up its strikes on Syrian airports and air bases to prevent Iran from increasing its use of air lines to supply allies in Syria and Lebanon with weapons, writes Reuters.
