Russian figure skaters lack motivation without international tournaments – Kommersant

Two-time Olympic champion in figure skating Maxim Trankov believes that without international tournaments, it is difficult for Russian figure skaters to develop due to the lack of sufficient motivation. However, according to him, if we compare the level of Russian athletes before and after removal from international competitions, now it has become higher.
“Of course, without international starts it is difficult to grow and develop. Motivation always comes with competitions, we have tournaments, although for now they are only within the country. This, of course, is not enough, but we can only wait. Everyone wants to go out, win and earn prize money. How long this can continue to exist is difficult to predict, but for now we exist,” Trankov said “RBC Sport”.
Figure skaters from Russia cannot take part in international competitions from March 1, 2022 due to the decision of the International Skating Union made in connection with the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine. Faced with difficulties due to international sanctions imposed on the industry, Russian figure skaters began to change their sports citizenship.
