Russian chess player Valentina Gunina won the world blitz championship. Based on the results of 17 rounds, she scored 14 points. The competition took place in Samarkand from December 29 to 30.
In the final game, the Russian woman beat the Ukrainian Anna Muzychuk with white pieces. Correspondent TASS reported that after the defeat, the Ukrainian chess player refused to shake the Russian’s hand. Second place in the championship was taken by Alexandra Kosteniuk (13.5 points), who changed her Russian sports citizenship to Swiss. Third place went to Zhu Jin’er from China (12.5 points).
A TASS correspondent who was present at the championship reported that Ukrainian chess player Anna Muzychuk refused to shake hands with Russian Valentina Gunina after her defeat in the 17th round of the World Blitz Championship.
Valentina Gunina is 34 years old. This is the athlete’s second victory in her chess career. The last time she became the world blitz champion was in 2012. Gunina is also a three-time European chess champion and a five-time Russian champion.
