Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti that Russian athletes can independently decide to participate in the Olympic Games. According to him, those who are ready for this should participate in the Games in Paris.

“We proceed from what has already been said by the president several times: our athletes and the relevant federations themselves make the decision to participate in the Olympic Games,” Mr. Peskov said. He also recalled the statement of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), according to which Russian athletes will not have to sign any documents.

On December 8, 2023, the IOC allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris. The IOC has put forward several demands to the athletes – they will have to compete as neutral athletes without a flag or anthem. In March, the head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), Stanislav Pozdnyakov, said that the IOC could oblige athletes to sign documents with the necessary conditions for participation. Then one of the conditions was public condemnation of the hostilities in Ukraine.
