Russian national teams and clubs will be able to return to participation in competitions under the auspices of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) only after Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. This was announced by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.

“Russia will return to football only when the events in Ukraine are over,” Aleksandr Čeferin said on a Serbian channel Sportclub. He also told the details of the termination of cooperation with Gazprom.

According to UEFA, this decision was primarily a symbolic act – he emphasized that it was difficult to advertise Gazprom during the sanctions campaign against Russia. “I’m really sorry, but we had to do it. But it is worth recognizing that most often those who still buy gas from the same company complain about this topic,” said Mr. Čeferin.

Russian clubs and national teams were suspended from participation in international UEFA competitions in February 2022. At the same time, UEFA terminated the sponsorship contract with Gazprom, which had been the official sponsor of the Champions League since 2012. The latest partnership agreement with UEFA was signed in 2021 and was due to last until 2024.
