The State Duma withdrew the bill to change the names of the villages of Lokh and Shalava
The bill on renaming settlements with ambiguous names, including the villages of Lokh, Shalava, Bukhalovo and others, was withdrawn by deputies of the Russian State Duma.
It was previously stated that such toponyms may be perceived as offensive or derogatory for residents of these settlements. Due to this it was proposed to change the name of villages, villages and towns.
According to information published on the website of the lower house of parliament, the bill was withdrawn on February 12, 2024 after considering it in the first reading on November 27. Representatives from the Committee on Regional Policy and Local Self-Government came to the conclusion that the proposed norms run counter to existing laws.
The explanatory note to the document noted that residents of some settlements face negative situations due to offensive names, and therefore they have to move or change their place of registration.
The potentially offensive ones included the village of Shalava in the Yaroslavl region, the village of Durkino in the Kirov region, the village of Lokh in the Saratov region, the villages of Bukhalovo, which are in the Yaroslavl, Tver and Arkhangelsk regions, the village of Pukovo in the Tver region, Popki in the Pskov region and others.
Earlier, the head of the Popkovsky rural settlement, Alexey Ivakhnov, commented on the bill. He stated that Residents of the village have a normal attitude towards its name and no one is embarrassed by it.
