The birth rate in the Russian Federation will fall until 2035

The birth rate in the Russian Federation will decline until 2030-2035. If the problem is not solved, our country faces economic stagnation due to the “old age trap.” Sergei Chesnokov, head of the project “Demographic Platform.RF”, member of the coordination council of the RF OP for national projects and national conservation, spoke about this URA.RU.

The demographer believes that the situation with the decline in the birth rate will worsen until 2030. “Possibly until 2035,” added Chesnokov.

A number of demographic waves that overlap each other will lead to negative developments. In the previous period, as the expert pointed out, the birth rate was low due to perestroika and the crisis of the 90s. Very few women were born then who have now entered reproductive age. They give birth to only 1.41 children (total fertility rate at the end of 2023), Chesnokov cited Rosstat statistics.

Russia’s population is aging. “The burden of the elderly” leads to economic stagnation and depressive processes in society. If life expectancy increases and the birth rate falls, this collectively leads to the old age trap, the demographer explained.
