Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation Ella Pamfilova during a speech at forum “Territory of Meanings” stated that Russia does not need Western democracy. In her opinion, now democracy in the West is “not the power of the majority, but the power of the minority.”
“For me, what democracy is is just a mechanism, a way of forming power through elections. What is happening now in the West: this is democracy – not the rule of the majority, this is the rule of the minority. In that Western understanding, we don’t need such a democracy,” Ms. Pamfilova said in response to a request to comment on “the statement by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov for The New York Times” (edition reportedthat Dmitry Peskov called the elections in the Russian Federation “not a democracy, but an expensive bureaucratic procedure,” the Kremlin spokesman himself said that the publication quoted his words incorrectly).
The head of the CEC noted that Western democracy “has seriously degraded”, so the Russian authorities cannot perceive it as a model. In addition, Ella Pamfilova said that she considers the CEC “one of the most effective departments” in Russia. “With minimal costs, we solve new problems as efficiently as possible. And I think that many departments should learn how we do it,” she stressed.
Formerly Mrs. Pamfilova statedthat the 2024 presidential election in Russia will be a “change of eras.” In her opinion, Western countries are already working to disrupt the campaign and are trying in every possible way to “discredit the electoral processes” in the Russian Federation. According to the head of the CEC, the electoral system is ready for the presidential elections, as over the years of work, a “viable, very viable, well-targeted, motivated system” has been created. As an example of successful work, she cited the vote on amendments to the Constitution during the pandemic, when “modern ways” were found to ensure the safety of people.
