The United Nations Specialized Agency for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) must fulfill its responsibility to protect journalists who are harassed and targeted in Ukraine, the Baltic States and Moldova, as well as in Western countries. Such a statement was made on Friday, May 19, by the Russian representative office at the organization.
Diplomats from the Russian Federation recalled that the UNESCO Executive Committee issued a mandate to the secretariat of this organization, obliging it to respond appropriately to infringement of the rights of representatives of the media.
The permanent mission of the Russian Federation recalled the crimes against Russian journalists in Ukraine, the Baltic states and Moldova, the arbitrary blocking of Russian media accounts in the West, and the persecution of the press through the extremist website “Peacemaker”.
UNESCO must respond to these facts and take appropriate measures to protect journalists, the permanent mission concluded.
Earlier, the chairman of the Union of Journalists of Russia, Vladimir Solovyov, explained why Russia was ranked 155th in the Press Freedom Index, which is compiled by Reporters Without Borders. According to Solovyov, “these are just a few impostors in Paris who form a rating based on dubious data,” and “with regard to Russia, they receive information from the most furious Russophobes.”
At the same time, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin expressed the opinion that Russia today remained the only island of freedom for the media.
