RUSADA has recorded 23 cases of athletes using meldonium since the beginning of the year

Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) reported on the identification of 23 cases of meldonium use by Russian athletes. 8 of them have already been disqualified; proceedings against another 15 athletes are ongoing.
RUSADA does not disclose the names of the athletes caught taking meldonium. The organization points out that the number of participants in sports competitions taking meldonium has been growing in recent years: for example, in 2021, sanctions were applied to 18 athletes for using meldonium; last year, 19 athletes were punished for the same violation of anti-doping rules.
At the same time, RUSADA previously noted that there were more people suspected of using meldonium: this year excited 115 anti-doping cases due to the detection of this drug in athletes’ tests.
Meldonium was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of prohibited substances in 2016. In the first months after this, almost 300 athletes from Russia tested positive for meldonium. In particular, curler Alexander Krushelnitsky was deprived of his bronze medal at the 2018 Olympics because of this, and former world number one Maria Sharapova was disqualified for 15 months.
