Keith Rupert Murdoch was born on March 11, 1931 in Melbourne, Australia, the son of Sir Keith Murdoch and his wife Elizabeth Murdoch (née Green). He has English, Irish and Scottish ancestry. Keith Murdoch was a war correspondent and later a regional newspaper magnate, owning two newspapers in Adelaide (South Australia) and a radio station in a mining town, and chairman of the Herald and Weekly Times. Keith Rupert later decided to go by his middle name, that is, the name of his maternal grandfather.

Murdoch studied philosophy, politics and economics at Worcester College, Oxford in England. He kept a bust of Lenin in his room and had the nickname “Red Rupert”. After the death of his father (who was much older than the future billionaire’s mother) when he was 21, Murdoch returned from Oxford to take charge of what was left of the family business. The entrepreneur made his first acquisition in America in 1973, when he bought the San Antonio Express-News. However, he very quickly increased his assets. In 2015, he left his post as CEO of 21st Century Fox, but continued to own the company until it was acquired by Disney in 2019. A number of television broadcast assets were spun off into Fox Corporation and are still owned by Murdoch. This includes the Fox News channel, considered the mouthpiece of the US Republican Party, where the media mogul was executive director from 2016 to 2019.
