Royal Navy set up new base in northern Norway

The Royal Navy of Great Britain has opened a new Arctic operating base in the north of Norway, says in a press release published on the website of the fleet.
“The new Arctic operating base will support the British commandos [спецназ] over the next ten years as the UK underscores its commitment to security in the High North.
Camp Viking, located in the village of Everbygd near the Norwegian city of Tromsø, will be a center for Royal Marines commandos and can house all personnel of the British Coastal Response Group (LRG). Also near the camp is the base of the Norwegian armed forces and the air base of the commando helicopter forces in Bardufoss.
“The location of the camp is ideal for containing threats in the region so that the UK can react quickly if necessary to protect the northern flank of NATO and its closest ally, Norway,” the press service added.
During the winter, some 1,000 commandos arrived at Camp Viking to conduct exercises with NATO allies and the Joint Expeditionary Force. Major Kirk Allen, commander of the UK military’s Winter Deployable Forces, said that Camp Viking is “a focal point for mountain and cold weather warfare training” and has been placed as a forward operating base in support of NATO operations.
