In the north of Norway, 65 km south of Tromsø, the Camp Viking Base, intended for the special forces of the Royal Naval Infantry, was put into operation, Western media report, citing the British Navy.
“The location of the base is ideal for deterring threats in the region, it is located so that the United Kingdom can quickly respond if necessary to protect the northern flank of NATO and its close ally Norway,” Interfax quoted the British command as saying.
It is noted that “the new base for conducting Arctic operations will support British special forces for 10 years” and that “the United Kingdom underlines its commitment to the task of ensuring security in the Arctic.”
Media also explain that Norway refuses to create permanent bases for foreign military. For this reason, Camp Viking will operate for 10 years. About 1,000 Marines will be stationed at the base this winter.
