A new rally against the adoption of the law on foreign agents began on the square in front of the Georgian parliament building in the center of Tbilisi. Levan Khabeishvili, leader of the opposition United National Movement party, speaking to the audience, called for daily protests until the bill is withdrawn.
“Yesterday’s dispersal of a peaceful rally put everything in its place,” the politician said. “The authorities have completely discredited themselves and are no longer legitimate.”
Earlier Wednesday, women’s marches were held in Tbilisi and other cities, where participants also protested against the new law and accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of lobbying Moscow’s interests.
The day before, a protest in Tbilisi led to clashes between protesters and police, the latter using water cannons and tear gas. Several dozen people were reported to have been arrested. President Salome Zurabishvili expressed her solidarity with the protesters. The Georgian parliament on the morning of March 8 announced that sent the draft law, adopted the day before in the first reading, for analysis to the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.
