The constituent entities of the Russian Federation are instructed to prepare for the implementation of measures aimed at preventing the emergence and spread of plague. This is stated in a resolution signed by the head of Rospotrebnadzor, chief sanitary doctor of the Russian Federation Anna Popova, published on Friday, June 23.
The document recommends taking into account the epidemic risks of the activity of natural plague foci located on the territory of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
As part of these measures, Rospotrebnadzor advised organizing public information on plague prevention measures, as well as training medical workers in this direction.
The recommendations of Rospotrebnadzor followed reports of 137 natural plague foci in 17 regions of Mongolia, including in close proximity to the Russian Federation and China. According to scientists, the western regions on the border of Russia and China are in the high-risk zone. Every year there are recorded cases of human infection with plague.
Closest to the Russian border, natural foci of bubonic plague can be found in the northwestern Mongolian region of Uvs, bordering the Republic of Tyva. The last time surveys were conducted in this Mongolian aimag was in 2022. Then epidemiologists came to the conclusion that the activity of the natural focus of the disease in Uvsa has increased.
