Rospotrebnadzor has strengthened radiation control over products imported from Japan

Rospotrebnadzor has tightened radiation control over products imported from Japan after reports of Tokyo’s intention to start dumping radioactive water into the ocean. We are talking about the liquid that was used to cool the reactors at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant.

“In order to prevent the circulation of aquatic biological resources and products from them (fish, fish products, seafood, etc.) produced in Japan with a high content of radionuclides into the territory of the Russian Federation, Rospotrebnadzor instructed the territorial authorities to strengthen sanitary and quarantine control upon import in the Russian Federation of the above products, as well as control in circulation, ”says message supervisory agency.

Rospotrebnadzor added that the situation with the supply of fish and seafood from Japan to Russia is under special control of the department.

Earlier about the intention to strengthen control over fish and other products supplied from Japan declared Chinese authorities.

The accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant occurred in 2011. As a result, nuclear fuel melted at the first, second and third reactors. Over the past years, the water used to cool the reactors, after being cleaned from radionuclides, was stored in special tanks installed at the station. However, about 140 tons of radioactive water are added daily. The tanks are now almost 90% full.

In this regard, the Japanese government decided in August 2023 to start reset purified water to the ocean. Tokyo’s plan was supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The agency’s report noted that the release of treated water would have negligible radiological impacts on people and the environment.
