The head of the Yekaterinburg Research Institute of Virus Infections of the SSC VB “Vector” of Rospotrebnadzor, Doctor of Biological Sciences Alexander Semenov, in an interview with reporters, explained the high contagiousness of the new strain of coronavirus XBB.1.5, called “Kraken”.
According to the expert, this mutation is another version of the evolution of the coronavirus, which has a change in the structure of the spike or spike protein.
Kraken is a subvariant of the XBB.1.5 omicron strain of the coronavirus, another evolutionary variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, despite its contagiousness, it does not cause more severe complications in patients.
“Apparently, Kraken does not cause more severe variants of the disease … So far, there are no such data,” Semenov added.
